Ct part1

"as soon as she’s fully recovered” “recovered? Recovered from what?”

A confused Daniel followed Teal’c into the infirmary. He glancing over to where Janet was standing, purportedly taking Sam’s pulse. He knew better, he saw her hand slipping out from holding Sam's when she heard the door open.

Sam... he gasped seeing her so still on the bed. Even in her sleep she was normally moving, tossing, turning. You could see her brain still going when she slept. Not now.

Turning his attention back, he listened to Janet talking to Teal’c. She said Sam would be fine. Well, Janet would know. Right? Right. Janet walked off to her office, but Daniel found it difficult to move. Just leaned against the foot board of Sam's bed. Until he was distracted by Jack. And Teal’c. What? Turning, he caught Teal’c lifting Jack by his shirt collar onto the bed, face down and cross wise.

Muttering at *whatever* those 2 were up to, Daniel wandered off, after one final glance at Sam, to see what Janet was up to.

The office door was closed tight. For a minute he hesitated. “UGH!” he closed his eyes and walked on through the door. Opening his eyes again, he jumped back when he realized he was standing in the middle of Janet's desk.

Looking down, Janet was in her chair. Face down on her desk blotter, her elbows to the side, resting on the desk, her arms crossed over the top of her head. She looked so sweet like that, until he looked closer. Her shoulders were shaking. Paying more attention, he could hear the sobs starting to wrack her, deep down in her small body. Walking around the desk, he approached her from the side. Not even thinking, Daniel reached out to grab her shoulder, but his hand passed straight through her.

Damn it! He looked at his hand, clenching his fist in frustration. At the same moment, Janet gasped. Pulling her arms away from her head, tear stained eyes looked wildly about the room.

Daniel stood stunned for a moment. Glanced back down at his hand. He reached out, gently bringing his hand towards Janet again. Softly- as if he were able to actually touch her- he caressed her cheek. Wishing with all his heart that he could actually touch the tear tracks and rub them away.

Janet pushed back in her chair, standing abruptly and almost running toward the door. She stopped there, turning back for a moment, her hand on her cheek. Right where Daniel had just been touching her. Shuddering, she turned back, opening and walking out the door.

Daniel stood still, staring at his hand. "She felt me," he murmured to himself in amazement. Looking up to stare at Janet's empty chair, then towards the door. Slowly, he followed her out of the office.

He almost ran into her again right outside the office. She was rubbing a wet cloth across her face, standing on tiptoe to peer into the mirror. He smiled slightly to himself, watching her try to fix her shambled hair and makeup. How many times did he and Sam have to listen to her grousing (okay, Sam called it bitching...) about the height of mirrors in his place, her place, the office, the height of cabinets. Chuckling, he caught her hop- jumping to see her lower chin.

He just knew when all this was over, there would be yet another maintenance requisition going through to lower that mirror. If she had to do it herself.

His mood changed abruptly. He sighed to himself. When this was all over... hopefully, it *would* be all over. Soon. He had to believe that. Where there is Hope....

He watched Janet walk over to Sam's bedside. She peered over to see Jack sound asleep, still mummified in the big black sweater thing. Teal'c must have put him back into the bed right.

Slipping her hand down, Janet took Sam's gently in hers. With her other she reached up, brushing the few loose strands of hair out of her eyes. She leaned over to whisper to her. Daniel felt wrong, intruding, but stepped closer to listen.

"Sam, honey. Please. It's time to wake up. You have to wake up, soon. Please. You have to find Daniel. All of you do. But you can't until you wake up."

Daniel felt a wave of compassion towards both women, and not thinking reached out again. Of course, the second he did, he realized his mistake. His hand passed through Janet again, and on through Sam.

Janet stood upright quickly, looking around wide eyed. She almost screamed when she heard the faint whisper, "Daniel". Then she felt the squeeze on her hand. Looking down at the very pale woman, Janet smiled Sam was awake.

Shaking herself slightly, suddenly finding she was The Doctor again, she leaned back over to check Sam.

"Jan...." Sam broke off coughing. Janet reached over, helping Sam to sit slightly, and gave her some of the ice chips that were kept handy.

Sam smiled her gratitude. She grasped at Janet's hand, "Jan," she started again, taking a deep breath, "Janet, how is everyone?"

Janet hedged, telling Sam everyone would be okay. The Colonel was asleep right now, Teal'c's symbiote seemed to protect him, and heal what little damage might have been done to him. Teal'c had even gone back and gotten the Crystal Skull and brought it back. Dr. Rothman was working on it right now.

"Where's Daniel?" Sam asked, looking around.

"He's... not here," Janet softly said.

"Whatdaya mean?" Sam asked, still drowsy. "He was right here. Just a second ago. I felt him," she finished, quite confused.

"Sam, honey," Janet started tentatively, she felt her hand shaking slightly in Sam's. Taking a breath, she continued "Sam, Daniel isn't here. Don't you remember, on the planet with the skull, he disappeared?"

"No. NO!" Sam tried to shout. Falling back on the pillows, she lay there, shaking her head, "no, he's here. I felt him."

"Sam, I am sorry, but it had to have been me you felt. Not Daniel. He is *not* here. You have to sleep now," pressing at Sam's head, she lightly rubbed her temples, "sleep, and when you wake up, you can work on finding him. Sleep." She kept up the gentle mantra of sleep, until her patient finally succumbed to her weariness and fell asleep.

Gently, she kissed Sam's temple. Straightening the bed clothes, she got up, walking over to check on her other patient. The not-so-patient one, she grinned.

"Doc," Jack muttered, scaring Janet half to death. She shook her head, not sure of how much more of this stress she could take.

"Colonel? Don't you think you be asleep right now?"

"Depends... can I get a kiss, too?"

"Shit," Daniel muttered at the exact same moment as Janet.

"Sir?"

"know, yer gettin a lil to friendly with my Major there," he murmured "better have honest inn.. innertens... inertensions ... in. ten. tions. With her." He finally stumbled out.

Grinning, she leaned over, kissed his forehead, much to Jack's surprise, and Daniel's delight. She tucked his bed clothes up over him as well. With a little grin on her face, she leaned over, whispering, "Only the best of, sir."

"'kay" Jack mumbled. Falling back asleep.

Janet looked at both of them. Knowing they would both sleep a couple more hours, Janet went to one of the empty beds, and after alerting a nurse and an airman, curled up and fell asleep herself.
